The Social Fund exists to assist low income families in meeting their daily and
most basic needs. Such financial support is provided by the government in the form of repayable interest-free loans as well as grants. Yet according to a recent report, the government program intended to help the needy has failed many people especially those who are in need of it most. The study was conducted by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Considering the alarming result of the survey, the institution has thus called for immediate review and reform of the Social Fund.
Based on the latest survey, the
Social Fund has sometimes failed the poorest recipients of the financial assistance. According to some people, the program is failing many people due to the fact that many applications have been rejected or if they were accepted, only a fraction of the support was given. Moreover, the people complained that the process of the application often takes a long time. Due to this problem, the poor are forced to avail commercial loans, borrow money from relatives and friends, skip meals, sell properties, and resort to other tactics just to cope up. Obviously, these options make life more difficult for the poor citizens of the nation.
